ABOUT

The Right Here, Right Now Climate 5K—Uniting Sport and Climate Justice

On Sunday, April 16, 2023, the inaugural Right Here, Right Now Climate 5K transformed the streets of Louisville, Colorado into a moving tribute to resilience, remembrance, and the power of community-led climate action. Held under the banner of Right Here, Right Now Sport—a global initiative harnessing the unifying force of athletics to advance climate justice—the event drew runners, walkers, and families from across the region and beyond.

The 5K raised critical awareness and support for those impacted by the catastrophic 2021 Marshall Fire, one of the most destructive climate-induced wildfires in Colorado history. Propelled by hurricane-force winds and fueled by drought-stricken conditions, the blaze tore through Boulder County, claiming two lives, incinerating over 1,000 homes, and leaving more than $2 billion in damages in its wake.

By channeling collective energy through movement, the Right Here, Right Now Climate 5K honored the victims and survivors while spotlighting the escalating human toll of climate change. It stood not only as a fundraiser, but as a living call to action—reminding participants that the climate crisis is not a distant threat, but a present emergency unfolding in our own backyards.

THE RACE

Three-time Olympic marathoner and Right Here, Right Now Race Director Lee Troop called on runners of all backgrounds to lace up not just in pursuit of a personal best—but to stand in solidarity with those affected by the devastating Marshall Fire. His heartfelt appeal underscored the power of sport to unify communities and inspire action in the face of climate-fueled tragedy.

Set against the striking backdrop of Louisville, Colorado—ground zero for the 2021 inferno that destroyed over 1,000 homes—the scenic 5K wound through resilient neighborhoods before finishing in the heart of downtown. After crossing the finish line, participants came together over local food and craft beer, celebrating a shared purpose beyond the race clock
