ABOUT

Call for Code is the Official developer platform for the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance. Created by David Clark Cause, with the support of Founding Partner IBM, Global Partner UN Human Rights and Affiliate the Linux Foundation, Call for Code asks the 24 million developers around the world each year to help solve climate challenges with software solutions.

With an assist from French President Emmanuel Macron at the VivaTech Conference in Paris in 2018, IBM announced their initial $30 million dollar investment in the Call for Code Global Initiative, and the following year upped their support to 55 million so they could help develop and deploy top solutions.

Now in its eighth year, Call for Code has become the largest engagement of developers in history, with millions of tech tech submissions, and over 40,000 apps created to date.

CALL FOR CODE CLIMATE CHALLENGE WINNER ANNOUNCED

FloodZap - Kirinyaga University, Kenya

As part of the Call for Code Climate Challenge, developers worldwide answered the call to confront the escalating threat of climate-driven disasters. From Kenya, student innovators at Kirinyaga University emerged as global winners for their life-saving solution: FloodZap.

Leveraging IBM watsonx.ai and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), FloodZap is an AI-powered flood response platform engineered to protect vulnerable populations during deadly floods - many of whom lack access to smartphones or internet connectivity. With a simple text command (*384#), citizens in distress can request assistance from basic feature phones. In seconds, FloodZap processes live environmental data to generate personalized evacuation plans and deliver them in real-time, in both English and Swahili. Simultaneously, responders like the Kenya Red Cross receive dynamic dashboards with prioritized, actionable intelligence, enabling rapid and precise rescue operations. With its proven MVP, RescueRiser now aims to scale FloodZap’s impact to flood-prone regions around the world.
